… a Detective Wheatley mystery.

As Madge sashayed towards a young man hovering at the edge of The Level, Wheatley stood, took out his pocket handkerchief and wiped his cheek to ensure that no trace of the kiss remained. Thinking of the embarrassment should his land lady discover a handkerchief stained by lip rouge in his next bag of washing, Wheatley walked to a nearby waste bin and dropped the handkerchief into it. Pausing, he reflected on his propensity to fear what others thought of him, shook his head and retrieved the handkerchief, determined that he would place it in his laundry bag that very evening.  Then, having consulted his notebook, he squared his shoulders and strode off in the direction of Carlton Hill where he had to investigate a report of disturbing happenings.
